DR. KRISTINA BERTL OR WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE A YOUNG TALENT
When Dr. Kristina Bertl came over BoneModels, we were shocked by the energy, determination and the way she delved into details when communicating how her new customized model should look like. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 2015 and specializes in Periodontology while working at the Department of Periodontology in Malmö (Sweden). Also, she is one of the speakers for fab2dent, which is a group of clinicians and researchers providing research-based clinically relevant education for the benefit of the patients. BoneModels: Dr. Kristina Bertl, if one takes a look at your professional background, it becomes evident that we are facing a huge young talent. What inspired you?
Dr. Kristina Bertl: As a student and young dentist, I was (and I am still) fascinated to see which teeth can be saved and which defects can be tremendously improved by our treatment – so I got very eager to be able to do this myself and I guess additionally I really like my job and what I am doing and then everything is much easier!
Now, you specialized in Periodontology – Why did you choose this field?
There are several reasons why I decided to specialize in Periodontology – for example I love the whole treatment planning as well as all the connections between periodontology and general medicine – in my opinion this makes this field very interesting! Further, I love to do surgeries, but I am more into handling of the soft tissue than into huge bone augmentations…
Which is currently your subject of research and what do you expect to discover?
Looking at my publications, I would say, that my research spectrum is rather broad, however, recently I started to focus on the interaction between periodontitis and gut diseases. And what do I expect to discover…? Ask me in 2-3 years again!
Sure, we will! The obvious question to be asked is: how did you know about BoneModels?
I got to know about BoneModels from a colleague, who recommended me to use them for a course, which I was planning at that time.
Models imitate nicely the clinical situation and one can “plan” the defect exactly, which is of course impossible in human specimen
Did you have any experience with alternative workshop materials, such as pig heads, eggs, etc.?
I have a lot of experience with courses at the Anatomical Institute and with fixated or fresh frozen human specimen/heads. Especially for sinuslift courses fresh frozen human heads are the best and most realistic scenario we can offer someone who wants to learn how to do a sinuslift. But of course, this option is not available in each country and it is much more expensive than using a model. Hence, to get a feeling for the sinuslift models are very nice and for many other procedures (e.g. peri-implantitis treatment, regenerative periodontal surgeries, etc.) models imitate nicely the clinical situation and one can “plan” the defect exactly, which is of course impossible in human specimen.
That’s a very good explanation, Dr. Kristina Bertl. Which is the difference between teaching with and without BoneModels?
I think especially for young dentists and of course also for more experienced dentists, who want to learn a new procedure, it is nice to have next to the theoretical part covered by a lecture, the possibility to test the procedure and/or new materials within a hands-on part.
Would you say that BoneModels helps you increasing the quality of your workshops? If so, why?
Yes – for the reasons mentioned above and additionally, people working at BoneModels are very nice and I like a lot the option to design my “own” model for a fair price and then I get exactly what I would like to have for my courses.
